How To Become A Guru

8 December 2008 One Comment

Being a Guru was never on my list of things to do

….so you can imagine my surprise the other day when I got a Google Alert that someone had suggested me as a guru at a new site that rates gurus.

Now before I get to where I was suggested as a guru I’d like to tell you what I’ve been doing over the past few years and how you might end up being a guru too someday (even if you don’t want to be a “guru”)…

First of all - selling is service.

In fact this is something I frequently discuss with my friends Judith and Jim who are working on a new book that explains how selling is actually “spiritual service” - it’s a bond between you and your customers and it’s something that must mutually benefit each side of the transaction.

In most cases you as the business owner are expecting or accepting money as a form of compensation or appreciation for the service or product you provide.

The customer could be paying for almost anything depending on what your business is, but what you are selling is expected to improve or satisfy your customers desire.

  • If your product or service falls short on it’s promise you can expect to have unhappy customers and your business will suffer and most likely fail eventually.
  • If you serve your customers and they don’t feel cheated you are on the right track.
  • If you serve your customers and they consistently get more than they expect you can expect to have happy customers who will tell others about you, and in turn your business will take on legs of it’s own.

Well one of the services I provide is sharing my knowledge of internet marketing with others, I didn’t start out as an expert, in fact it took my some long, hard months of bangin’ away with long nights at the computer. But now I know what I’m doing and I’ve done it enough to know that certain actions will give a certain result and people trust my advice when it comes to setting up a business system, specifically SEO and getting free traffic.

I don’t know it all by any means, but what I know I frequently share, and I know more than the majority, which makes me an expert.

You may not know it yet but others may see you as an authority, expert or guru at something.

Really, the way I see it is: a guru is simply a person, like you and me, who has dedicated his/her time and efforts toward one particular skill and decided to share it with others.

This sharing is what makes a person an expert or guru.

If that person shares their knowledge with others and the recipients get the desired effect then that person begins to be viewed as an expert. When enough people see that person as an expert and word begins to travel then an expert may begin to be seen as a guru.

So now back to the site I officially became a guru at…

If being a guru means I’ll be able to help others find more success and satisfaction in their lives, then I’ll gladly take it.

So before I sign off here’s my business success advice (in a nutshell) that I left at Rate Your Guru:

“Let your passions and interests lead you. Plan out your projects with a beginning and ending point with automation as the goal. Stick to your plan. Split-test and track your results. Build a team you can rely on for help. Find people to compensate for your weaknesses. Stay positive and keep negative people away from you. Have fun and NEVER, EVER give up.”
